The purpose of this Glass Information Bulletin is to acquaint those associated with the glazing industry with the impact Building Envelope Commissioning (“BECx”) can and will have as commissioning is implemented in construction projects. BECx is a process intended to verify through standards and testing that the materials, components, and systems that make up the building envelope achieve the objectives and meet the performance requirements of the owner.
Photovoltaics, more commonly known as solar panels, are one of the purest and most reliable methods for producing renewable energy. Each panel is composed of photovoltaic cells, which activate when exposed to the sun, absorbing its rays and converting them into clean electricity. However, while solar panels are becoming increasingly popular, surprisingly few people have actually been face to face with one; even those who live in homes or work in offices powered by photovoltaics may not have encountered them up close.
Solar panels have been available for decades, but they have mostly been clunky structures that could be tacked onto existing buildings. Even at their most elegant, these add-on solar panels have a hard time integrating into the rest of the building.
