DAVID LAWRENCE CONVENTION CENTER IN PITTSBURGH, PA
WS was hired by the Sports & Exhibition Authority of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to provide forensic assessment of the Ceiling and Soffit Panel System for the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.
Deficiences in the ceiling panel system installed on the exterior of the Convention Center were noticed when the panels began to fall off of the building during a wind event. WS was contracted to investigate the situation; to assess the entire ceiling panel system; to determine what pressure the current system could withstand, and to see if it met the requirements of the specifications and contract documents.
After a detailed review of all project documents received, WS determined that the ceiling panel system was not in compliance with the documents. The ceiling panel system installed on the exterior of the Convention Center was designed and manufactured for interior applications, and resulted in the problems that were occuring on the buildling.
After iterative reviews by the owner and project team, WS, assisted in developing and approving a solution to fix the existing panels in place, greatly reducing the owenrs risk and minimizing the cost to the responsible parties and constituents. The fix was completed in 2008 and no further damage has been reported.
